On the evening of November 26, 2025, Fayetteville police responded to reports of a shooting around 6:10 p.m. at the Motel 6 in the 3700 block of Bragg Boulevard. Officers arrived to find Perry Lamont Sykes, a 47-year-old Black male of African American ethnicity from Fayetteville, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries despite medical efforts to save him.
According to investigators, the violence stemmed from a confrontation between Sykes and a man he knew, identified by police as 24-year-old Chandon Cornelius Taylor of Fayetteville. Witness accounts and the initial police investigation indicate that the two men became involved in a physical fight at or near the motel, and during that altercation Taylor allegedly produced a firearm and shot Sykes. After the shooting, Taylor attempted to flee the area on foot, but officers searching the vicinity quickly located him close to the scene and took him into custody without further incident.
Taylor was formally arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Sykes's death and was booked into the Cumberland County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. Authorities have described the killing as an isolated incident arising from the dispute between the two men, emphasizing that there is no broader threat to the public. Fayetteville detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, and they have asked anyone with additional information about the events leading up to the shooting to contact Detective J. Phillips or submit an anonymous tip through local Crime Stoppers channels.
