On May 6, 2019, 23-year-old William D. Jones, a young African American man, was found with a gunshot wound at The Oaks at Silver Ridge apartment complex in High Point, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 12:32 a.m. when officers responded to several reports of a shooting at the location. Jones was discovered lying in the parking lot, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was the result of a drug deal gone wrong. Marquies J. Chandler, an 18-year-old African American male, and William A. Carter, a 26-year-old African American male, were identified as the suspects involved in the incident. Chandler and Carter reportedly attempted to rob Jones during the drug transaction. During the robbery, shots were fired, resulting in Jones being fatally wounded and Chandler sustaining a gunshot wound to his arm.
Chandler and Carter fled the scene before the police arrived. However, Chandler later showed up at High Point Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm. After receiving treatment, he was taken to the police station for questioning. The investigation led to the arrest of both Chandler and Carter. They were charged with first-degree murder and attempted robbery.
