Huey Pierce Long Jr., a 42-year-old white male, was a prominent U.S. Senator and former Governor of Louisiana. On September 8, 1935, he was fatally shot at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Long was an influential and popular politician, known for his Share Our Wealth program and his criticism of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. His death eliminated a potential presidential bid against Roosevelt in 1936.
