In the early hours of a Wednesday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a 26-year-old Hispanic man named Juan Enrique Reyes Lugo lost his life in a room at the Super 8 motel on Airline Highway. The date was February 2, 2022, and the circumstances surrounding his death would prove to be anything but ordinary. Responding to a call around 4 a.m., police officers arrived at the motel to find Lugo suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate medical attention he received before being transported to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to a suspect, 24-year-old Duke Flores. According to police reports, Flores himself contacted law enforcement, and when they located him at a nearby convenience store, he was armed with two handguns. Upon his arrest, Flores shared a chilling and bizarre motive for the killing. He claimed to have received a "spiritual message" from Santa Muerte, a figure of veneration in some Mexican folk traditions often associated with death. This message, he asserted, compelled him to kill Lugo. The two men were reportedly acquaintances.
Flores was taken into custody without incident and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He faced serious charges, including first-degree murder and the illegal use of a weapon.
