In the evening hours of April 3, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm on Harelson Street in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. When the sounds of the shots faded, 23-year-old Antonio Johnson, a male, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene, his life brought to an abrupt and violent end in the neighborhood near Fairfields Avenue.
The initial investigation into Johnson's death left authorities searching for answers, with the motive and the identity of the shooter or shooters unknown.
The investigation into Antonio Johnson's murder continued for just over two weeks. Then, on April 19, 2023, a significant breakthrough occurred in the case. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Task Force, Baton Rouge Police Homicide Detectives located and apprehended three suspects at a hotel on North Harrells Ferry Road. The individuals taken into custody were identified as 25-year-old Mark Shorter, 22-year-old Javan Shorter, and 21-year-old Terry Barnes.
Following their apprehension, all three men were arrested and subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. They each face the serious charge of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Antonio Johnson. The arrests brought a measure of progress in the case, though the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting on that April evening remain part of the ongoing legal process.
