In the summer of 2020, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening quiet on Linden Street in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, leaving a wake of tragedy. On July 15th, Cody Hypolite, a 27-year-old male, was caught in the deadly violence. The shooting, which erupted around 9:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of the street, claimed his life at the scene. He had sustained apparent gunshot wounds from which he would not recover, his future abruptly extinguished.
The incident was not a solitary act of violence
but a chaotic scene that left two men dead and a woman wounded. Alongside Cody Hypolite, another man, Jermaine Jarvis, was also shot. Emergency responders rushed Jarvis to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he succumbed to them shortly after arrival. A third victim, a woman, was also struck by the gunfire. She was transported to a hospital and, though injured, was expected to survive the ordeal, a lone survivor of the fatal encounter.
In the weeks that followed the violent deaths of Cody Hypolite and Jermaine Jarvis, investigators with the Baton Rouge Police Department worked to piece together the events of that tragic night. Their efforts led to a significant breakthrough in early August when they identified a suspect believed to be involved in the double homicide. The suspect was taken into custody, bringing a measure of progress to a case that had left a community reeling. He was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder for his alleged role in the shooting that ended two lives and forever altered another.
