In the spring of 2003, the life of 18-year-old Hillard Head Smith IV, an African American male, was cut short on the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana. On the evening of April 7th, Smith was discovered in front of an abandoned house, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. A student at Joseph S. Clark High School, his death was not a random act of violence but rather a targeted event rooted in a larger, ongoing gang-related conflict.
The authorities and community members quickly came to believe that his killing was an act of retaliation, a violent chapter in a deadly back-and-forth.
In the days that followed Smith's death, the streets buzzed with whispers and theories. Among his friends and family, a consensus began to form, pointing the finger at a 15-year-old student from John McDonogh High School, Jonathan 'Caveman' Williams. Though police had not officially named Williams as a suspect, the street justice system had already tried and convicted him in the court of opinion. This simmering belief would soon boil over into a tragic and violent escalation, forever linking the two teenagers in a grim narrative of revenge.
The simmering tensions erupted just one week after Smith's death. On April 14, 2003, the simmering desire for vengeance materialized in a brazen and shocking attack at John McDonogh High School. During a mid-morning gym class, two armed teenagers, later identified as Steven R. Williams and James Tate, stormed the school grounds. Their target was clear: Jonathan Williams. In a hail of bullets from an AK-47 and a semi-automatic pistol, Williams was shot at least 20 times, his life ending in a brutal act of retribution for a crime for which he was never officially charged. The chaos of the school shooting also resulted in injuries to three female students, and a pregnant senior was trampled in the ensuing panic.
The investigation into the school shooting was swift, leading to the arrests of Steven R. Williams and James Tate. Further investigation revealed a wider conspiracy to murder Jonathan Williams, implicating several others in the plot, including Raymond Brown, Tyrone Crump, Herbert Everett, and Michelle Fulton. All were subsequently convicted for their roles in the deadly revenge plot. While the murder of Jonathan Williams was solved, with his killers and their accomplices brought to justice, the same cannot be said for the death of Hillard Head Smith IV. To this day, there have been no publicly announced arrests or named suspects in his killing. The initial act of violence that set off a tragic chain of events remains, in the eyes of the law, an unsolved crime.
