In the summer of 2024, the life of 38-year-old Reginald Ware was tragically cut short in New Orleans. On the last day of July, his body was discovered on Texas Drive in the Algiers neighborhood, the result of fatal gunshot wounds. The initial discovery offered few immediate answers, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden violence that had claimed one of its own.
The New Orleans Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the death of the male victim.
As detectives delved into the circumstances surrounding Ware's death, a parallel investigation was unfolding across the city. On the very same day, another man, 42-year-old Christopher Cooke, was found deceased on the South I-10 Service Road. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office would later confirm that both men had died from gunshot-related injuries.
Through the course of their investigation, detectives began to suspect that the two homicides were not isolated incidents but were, in fact, connected. This crucial determination led them to identify a person of interest in both cases. In April of 2025, the New Orleans Police Department announced a significant breakthrough in the investigation. They had arrested Jamal Washington in connection with the murders of both Reginald Ware and Christopher Cooke. Following an interview with Washington, detectives secured warrants for his arrest, charging him with one count of second-degree murder for each death. Washington was subsequently booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
