On an autumn evening in Houma, Louisiana, the life of 36-year-old Willie Hart Jr. was brought to a violent and tragic end. It was October 21, 2015, when Hart, an African American man known to his friends as 'Chill Will,' was fatally shot in what has been described as an execution-style killing. The events of that night unfolded when Hart and his girlfriend arranged to meet 28-year-old Troy Nixon at a residence on Roselawn Avenue with the intention of purchasing ecstasy.
Upon their
arrival, Hart exited his vehicle and followed Nixon under a carport. It was there that he was ambushed by two assailants, Joshua Swan and Ahmad Lawson, who opened fire, striking him 17 times. The violence did not end with Hart. Lawson then approached the car where Hart's girlfriend was waiting and shot her through the window, injuring her with both the bullet and shattered glass. The attackers then fled the scene in a small black car, leaving a witness to summon emergency services.
The subsequent investigation into the brutal slaying revealed a case of mistaken revenge. Authorities determined that the murder of Willie Hart Jr. was carried out in retaliation for the death of Robert Swan, who was Joshua Swan's brother and had been killed two weeks prior. Rumors had circulated that Hart was involved in Robert Swan's death; however, these accusations were later proven to be false.
The two men responsible for the death of Willie Hart Jr. were eventually brought to justice. Both Joshua Swan and Ahmad Lawson were convicted of second-degree murder for their roles in the fatal shooting. Each man received a life sentence in prison without the possibility of probation, parole, or a suspended sentence. Their subsequent appeals of the convictions were denied.
