In the late afternoon of Thursday, August 19, 2021, a violent encounter at a gas station in Houma, Louisiana, claimed the life of a 29-year-old male resident of nearby Gray. Sequoia Oneal 'Que' Williams, a native of Terrebonne Parish, died from multiple gunshot wounds following a confrontation that escalated with tragic swiftness. The incident unfolded around 2:30 p.m.
at the BP gas station located at 905 Barataria Ave., near Tunnel Boulevard.
According to the investigation by the Houma Police Department, Williams was inside the gas station when a truck with several male occupants arrived. Williams reportedly armed himself with a handgun and went outside to confront one of the men in the truck, a 27-year-old. An altercation ensued, during which Williams allegedly struck the man with his firearm several times as they struggled over the weapon.
During this struggle, another individual from the truck, a 21-year-old Houma man, exited the vehicle and opened fire on Williams. Williams was struck by several bullets and was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooter did not flee; instead, he remained at the gas station until police officers arrived. He surrendered himself and his pistol to the authorities. He was then taken to the Houma Police station for questioning, where he cooperated with detectives and provided a voluntary statement regarding the events that had transpired.
Following the investigation, the case was presented to a Terrebonne Parish grand jury. In March 2022, after reviewing the evidence, the grand jury returned a 'no true bill.' This decision indicated that they did not find enough evidence to proceed with criminal charges against the 21-year-old shooter. Prosecutors stated that the grand jury's decision was based on the belief that the man had acted in self-defense. Consequently, no charges were filed in connection with the death of Sequia Williams.
