A 28-year-old man, Jason Ross, lost his life in a burst of gunfire outside a Lafayette, Louisiana apartment complex on the evening of January 13, 2016. Another individual was also wounded in the shooting, which shattered the night's quiet.
The investigation into the death of Jason Ross, a male victim, led Lafayette Police to identify two suspects. Within a day of the fatal shooting, authorities were searching for 20-year-old Jalen Eugene and 22-year-old Tevin Martell Colbert.
The search for the two men was extensive, with law enforcement agencies in the surrounding areas on alert.
The efforts to apprehend the suspects came to a head on January 15, 2016. Jalen Eugene was taken into custody by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Fugitive Task Force, with assistance from the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office. Later that same day, Tevin Martell Colbert was also apprehended by the Lafayette Police Department.
Following their arrests, both Eugene and Colbert faced serious charges related to the incident that claimed Jason Ross's life and injured another. They were each charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. Both men were subsequently booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. The motive behind the shooting was described by police as being related to narcotics.
