Shayne Joseph Burke, a 21-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of Sunday, October 3, 2021, in Lafayette, Louisiana. The incident took place around 2:00 p.m. in the 900 block of Peach Street, just feet from his mother's home. Burke was shot multiple times, including in the head, and his mother held him until emergency services arrived. He was transported to Lafayette General Medical Center, where he later died. Friends and family remembered Burke, a father to a young daughter, as a polite man who enjoyed making music and playing basketball.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Lafayette Police Department reported having no information on a suspect and appealed to the public for assistance. The investigation progressed over the following weeks, leading to the identification of a person of interest.
On November 27, 2021, Abram Landry, then 20 years old, was arrested by police in Grand Coteau based on warrants issued by the Lafayette Police Department. Landry was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a charge of second-degree murder for his alleged role in Shayne Burke's death. In addition to the murder charge, for which his bond was set at $350,000, Landry also had outstanding bench warrants and a charge for simple burglary. According to a report from July 2025, Abram Landry was still awaiting trial in connection with the murder.
