On July 10th of that year, 39-year-old African American male, Toreo Turk Thompson, was found shot to death inside his home. The tragedy was compounded by the discovery of his 65-year-old aunt, Beverly Thompson, who was also found fatally shot, seated in her favorite chair outside the residence. The brutal double murder sent shockwaves through the community, as friends and neighbors struggled to comprehend the senseless loss of two beloved individuals.
Toreo Thompson was remembered as a good man and a devoted father to his two sons, with a third child on the way as his fiancée was pregnant at the time of his untimely death. His aunt, Beverly, affectionately known as 'Cherokee,' was cherished for her kind and helpful nature. Their sudden and violent deaths left a void in the lives of those who knew them and prompted an urgent call for justice from the grieving community. The double homicide marked the second and third murders in Hammond that year, heightening concerns about safety and prompting local authorities to appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible.
The investigation into the tragic deaths of Toreo and Beverly Thompson soon led to a breakthrough. An armed robbery that had occurred approximately two hours before the murders, while not directly related to the homicides, proved to be a crucial piece of the puzzle in identifying the suspects. Information gleaned from the robbery victim led authorities to 20-year-old Elijah Walker. Following his arrest, Walker provided information that implicated two other individuals, 26-year-old Raheem Doby and 23-year-old Jerald Fontenberry. All three men were subsequently arrested and charged with one count of armed robbery and two counts of first-degree homicide in connection with the deaths of Toreo and Beverly Thompson, bringing a measure of hope to a community desperate for answers and justice.
