On October 22, 2017, at approximately 1:25 a.m., the Hammond Police Department responded to a shooting incident in the 1200 block of Blackburn Road in Hammond, Louisiana. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a verbal altercation had escalated into a triple shooting. Among the victims was 51-year-old Jose Varela, a Hispanic male, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals were injured and transported to North Oaks Medical Center for treatment.
