On New Year's Day in 2017, the life of 30-year-old Calvin Peter Stubbs, Jr. was tragically cut short in a violent incident in Anacoco, Louisiana. A male and former student-athlete at Hicks High School, where he played both basketball and baseball, Stubbs was known for his love of sports. He had also served his country for four years in the National Guard, with his active duty including the period of Hurricane Katrina.
The events of that day unfolded at a residence on Ross Road, where
Stubbs and another individual, 48-year-old Norma Ross, were fatally shot. Responding to a 911 call just after 7 p.m., Vernon Parish Sheriff's deputies arrived to find both victims deceased inside the home. Eyewitnesses at the scene identified the shooter as Norma Ross's nephew, 36-year-old Derrick Ross, also of Anacoco.
Following the shootings, Derrick Ross fled the scene, prompting an intensive search by law enforcement, including the Vernon Parish Special Response Team and the Vernon Correctional Facility Chase Team. The search of the immediate area concluded when officers discovered Derrick Ross's body in a wooded area near the residence. The Vernon Parish Coroner's Office later determined that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation concluded that Derrick Ross was responsible for the deaths of both Calvin Stubbs and Norma Ross in what was determined to be a double murder-suicide.
