In the early morning hours of January 20, 2017, the life of 31-year-old Simone Veal, a resident of Marrero, Louisiana, was tragically cut short in a violent domestic dispute. Veal, who was eight months pregnant, was shot and killed by her husband, 32-year-old Sylvester Holt. The incident began with an altercation at Veal's home, where Holt shot her.
She managed to flee in her car, but Holt pursued her.
The chase ended tragically when Holt, driving a U-Haul truck, rammed into Veal's vehicle. The collision occurred just as Westwego Police Officer Michael Louviere, 26, was stopping to assist what he likely perceived as a car accident. As Officer Louviere approached the scene, Holt ambushed him, shooting him in the back of the head. Both Veal and Officer Louviere were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later described the act as a 'cold-blooded murder.'
Following the murders, Holt fled the scene. He became the subject of a massive manhunt which culminated in a tense, hours-long standoff with police on the Crescent City Connection bridge in New Orleans. During negotiations with law enforcement, Holt admitted to killing both his wife and Officer Louviere. The motive for the horrific crime was later revealed to be Holt's discovery that Veal was pregnant with another man's child. The standoff concluded when Holt died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
