In the quiet community of Marrero, Louisiana, the life of 27-year-old Derielle Bernard, a female resident, was tragically cut short on October 24, 2017. She was a mother to two children, Bentley and Bai'lee, and was known by her loved ones as a fun and sweet person. Her life, however, had been marked by tragedy long before her own untimely death. When she was just ten years old, she and her sister discovered their mother, who had been shot and killed by her boyfriend.
On the evening of
October 23, 2017, Derielle was with 23-year-old Brandon Davis in the 6100 block of Second Avenue in Marrero. In the backseat of the car, her six-year-old son Bentley was asleep. In a sudden burst of violence, both Derielle and Brandon were shot. Brandon died at the scene, while Derielle was rushed to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Doctors informed her family that she had a zero percent chance of survival, and she succumbed to her injuries the following day. In a final act of generosity, her organs were donated, saving the lives of six people, including an infant.
The investigation into the double homicide led the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office to two teenage suspects: 17-year-old Sean Labaud and 18-year-old Terrke Johnson. According to authorities, both teenagers confessed to their involvement in the crime, which they stated was a drug-related robbery. Labaud admitted to being the shooter, while Johnson confessed to acting as the lookout.
Following their confessions, Sean Labaud was arrested and booked on one count of first-degree murder and one count of obstruction of justice. Terrke Johnson was arrested and booked on two counts of second-degree murder.
