In the summer of 2017, the life of 37-year-old Donald Wayne Ely, a male resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was tragically cut short. On the evening of June 29th, Ely was shot multiple times at 620 East Polk Street, near Thomas H. Delpit Drive. Emergency crews arrived to find him deceased at the scene. The nature of the incident immediately launched a homicide investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department.
The investigation into Ely's death unfolded over the following months,
revealing a motive rooted in events from nearly a decade prior. Authorities came to believe the shooting was an act of revenge connected to a 2008 incident where Ely had fatally shot a man named Henry Sterling, an act prosecutors in that case had deemed self-defense. This breakthrough led to a series of arrests in collaboration with the Louisiana State Police Fugitive Task Force.
Nearly two months after the shooting, the first suspect, 27-year-old Willie Tyrone Dunbar, was taken into custody. He faced a charge of second-degree murder, among other offenses. Shortly thereafter, a second individual, 45-year-old Deldridge Wilson, was arrested and charged as a principal to second-degree murder. The investigation culminated in the arrest of a third suspect, 24-year-old John Dunbar, Willie Dunbar's brother, who was also charged with second-degree murder. In November 2017, all three men were indicted on second-degree murder charges in connection with Donald Wayne Ely's death. John Dunbar was later arrested again in November 2018 on unrelated attempted murder charges while awaiting trial for Ely's slaying.
