In January 2023, a 33-year-old man named Anthony 'Tony' Mitchell died while in the custody of the Walker County Sheriff's Office in Alabama. His death was later ruled a homicide, with the cause being hypothermia and the underlying cause listed as sepsis resulting from infected injuries sustained during his incarceration and medical neglect. Mitchell's family has since filed a lawsuit against the Walker County Sheriff and several employees of the department.
