In the early 1980s, a 37-year-old male named Gary Smith became entangled with a burglary gang, a decision that would ultimately lead to his demise in North Bergen, New Jersey. As law enforcement began to close in on the group, members of the gang, including Smith, were advised to lay low. A room was rented for Smith and another associate, Daniel Deppner, at the York Motel in North Bergen to serve as a hideout.
