In the spring of 2023, a violent altercation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, resulted in the death of 29-year-old Steven Brown, a Black/African American male. The incident, which also claimed the life of 21-year-old Ray Griffin, unfolded on April 18 on Denova Street, shattering the neighborhood's afternoon calm. Deputies from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene following reports of a shooting and discovered a chaotic aftermath.
According to investigators, the tragic events were precipitated by an argument between Brown and Griffin, who were acquaintances. The dispute escalated dramatically, leading to both men drawing handguns and opening fire on each other. Both Brown and Griffin sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange. Despite being transported to a local hospital, neither man survived their injuries.
The investigation took a significant turn with the review of security camera footage from a residence on Denova Street. The footage revealed the presence of a third individual, 21-year-old Tyrece Rollins, at the scene. Rollins was observed interacting with one of the victims before the argument and subsequent shooting. During the gunfight, detectives noted that Rollins entered and exited the residence multiple times and, at one point, fired several shots at one of the victims.
Following the initial exchange of gunfire, Rollins was seen running to the back of the residence where he handed his gun to another man who then disposed of it. Rollins then took an AR-style handgun and placed it in one of the victim's cars. Based on the evidence gathered from the security footage, Tyrece Rollins was identified and subsequently arrested. He was booked on a charge of being a principal to second-degree murder for his role in the deadly confrontation.
