In the summer of 2016, a shadow fell over Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a city already wrestling with deep-seated tensions. Bradford Allen 'Brad' Garafola, a 45-year-old white male and a dedicated deputy with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, found himself at the heart of a tragic and violent event that would cut his life short. On the morning of July 17, 2016, what was supposed to be his last shift before a family vacation, Deputy Garafola was ambushed and killed in a targeted attack
against law enforcement.
The day began with a palpable sense of unease in the city, which was still reeling from the recent officer-involved shooting of Alton Sterling. A man named Gavin Eugene Long, a 29-year-old former Marine from Kansas City, Missouri, had traveled to Baton Rouge with a deadly purpose. Clad in black and armed with a semi-automatic rifle, Long began to prowl an area near a convenience store and car wash, actively seeking out police officers to target. The first reports to 911 described a man walking along the highway with a rifle, and as officers responded, Long unleashed a hail of gunfire.
Surveillance footage from that morning captured the chaos and Deputy Garafola's final heroic moments. He was seen taking cover from the gunfire when he witnessed a fellow officer, who had been shot, crawling for his life. Without hesitation, Garafola moved to help his wounded colleague, drawing the fire of the gunman. He returned fire, fighting back until he was fatally wounded. His actions were a testament to his character, as described by his brother-in-law, who said Garafola died 'doing what Brad had always done — trying to help someone else.' Two other officers, Matthew Gerald and Montrell Jackson of the Baton Rouge Police Department, were also killed in the ambush, and three others were wounded.
The gunman, Gavin Long, was killed at the scene by a SWAT officer, bringing an end to the violent rampage that lasted nearly 14 minutes. An investigation later revealed that Long, who associated with black separatist and sovereign citizen movements, was motivated by a rage against police and had specifically traveled to Baton Rouge to attack law enforcement. He left behind a suicide note, viewing his actions as a 'necessary evil' to bring about change. In the wake of the tragedy, there were no arrests to be made in connection with the shooting itself, as the sole perpetrator was deceased.
