In a tragic turn of events, LaQuetra Pidgeon, a 34-year-old Black / African American woman, died on December 7, 2017, two days after being shot in what police have described as a domestic murder-suicide in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A mother of three, Pidgeon was a respected corrections officer at Angola Prison.
The incident unfolded on the morning of December 5, 2017, at a residence on Banyan Trace Drive. Authorities reported that an argument is believed to have preceded the shooting.
The perpetrator was identified as 29-year-old Daniel Johnson of St. Francisville. Investigators believe Johnson shot Pidgeon before turning the gun on himself.
When emergency services arrived, Pidgeon was found in critical condition and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the head. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite medical efforts, LaQuetra Pidgeon succumbed to her injuries two days later. The case was classified as the thirteenth domestic homicide in East Baton Rouge Parish that year. As the sole suspect in the shooting died at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with Pidgeon's death.
