In a tragic turn of events on November 12, 2021, 16-year-old Tremiyah Lindsey, an African American female and a senior at Glen Oaks High School, was fatally wounded in a shootout in a Baton Rouge neighborhood. The incident unfolded on Avocado Drive, where Tremiyah, her older brother Tremayne Lindsey, and their mother had gone to confront a resident.
This confrontation quickly escalated into a violent exchange of gunfire that would ultimately claim the young girl's life.
According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, the violence began when Tremayne Lindsey exited their vehicle and opened fire on a home. In response to the initial shots, an individual from within the residence, a relative of the resident, retrieved a weapon and fired back at the aggressors. This act of reciprocation is being considered self-defense by the authorities, and it is not anticipated that this individual will face any charges. The shootout resulted in all three members of the Lindsey family sustaining gunshot wounds. While her mother was injured and expected to survive, Tremiyah was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Tremayne Lindsey was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Following his release, he was taken into custody and faced with five counts of attempted first-degree murder and a charge of aggravated criminal damage to property for his role in initiating the gun battle that led to his sister's death. The incident is part of a larger narrative of violence that has impacted the Lindsey family, as another of Tremiyah's brothers, Clifton Lindsey, was also killed in a separate shooting incident.
