In the late afternoon hours of September 23, 2018, tragedy struck on Swan Avenue in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, forever altering the lives of a local family. On that day, 18-year-old Jaquincy Jawan Ross, an African American male, was found with fatal gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response of law enforcement, Ross was pronounced dead at the scene, his life cut short just yards away from where his stepfather had been shot the previous year.
Jaquincy was known as a determined young man,
committed to protecting his younger brother and helping his girlfriend raise her young daughter. In the week leading up to his death, he had been focused on a simple act of kindness: saving up money to buy a scooter for the little girl's birthday. It was a gift he would never have the chance to give. The Baton Rouge Police Department swiftly launched a murder investigation to piece together the events that led to the teenager's untimely demise.
The investigation led authorities to 22-year-old Wilfred Celestine. On October 2, 2018, Celestine was apprehended by the Louisiana State Police Fugitive Task Force and taken into custody. He was subsequently booked at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, facing charges of second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Court documents later revealed a possible motive for the senseless act of violence. According to witnesses, Celestine was allegedly retaliating against Ross for the theft of a PlayStation that had occurred just hours before the shooting. It was also reported that Celestine had been released from prison not long before the incident for his involvement in a mass shooting in New Orleans three years prior. The Baton Rouge Police Department urged anyone with further information regarding the shooting to come forward as the legal process against Celestine began.
