In the late summer of 2018, the quiet community of Denham Springs, Louisiana, was unsettled by the discovery of a man's body. Fermin Pecina, a 38-year-old Hispanic male, was found deceased on August 10th. The cause of his untimely death was determined to be a single gunshot wound, prompting the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office to immediately launch a homicide investigation.
Authorities believed that Pecina, who had a passion for working on and detailing cars, had been deceased for at least eight hours before his body was located. In the weeks leading up to his death, Pecina had reportedly been staying in the Baton Rouge area.
The investigation into Pecina's death led authorities to a suspect. In May of 2019, nearly a year after the discovery of Pecina's body, 43-year-old Kevin Dukes of Baton Rouge was arrested and booked on the charge of second-degree murder. At the time of his arrest for Pecina's murder, Dukes was already under indictment for a separate alleged murder. The motive for Pecina's killing remained unclear to investigators.
Despite the initial arrest and charge against Kevin Dukes, the legal proceedings in the death of Fermin Pecina took a significant turn. A grand jury was presented with the evidence gathered by law enforcement in the case against Dukes. After reviewing the information, the grand jury declined to indict him for the murder of Fermin Pecina, citing a lack of sufficient evidence to proceed with a trial. Consequently, the charges against Dukes in connection with Pecina's death were dropped.
