On a summer afternoon in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, tragedy struck on Fairfields Avenue. On June 22, 2020, at approximately 3:15 p.m., 29-year-old Gary Fielding was shot and killed. According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office, Fielding sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. During the incident, a 21-year-old woman was also shot, but her injuries were not life-threatening, and she was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

investigation into the shooting led the Baton Rouge Police Department to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. Shortly after the incident, authorities apprehended 23-year-old Trenton Taplin of Sherwood Street. The investigation suggests that an altercation between Fielding and Taplin escalated, leading to the deadly confrontation. The specific motive behind the dispute has not been made clear by officials.
Following his arrest, Trenton Taplin was charged with first-degree murder for the death of Gary Fielding and attempted first-degree murder for the injuries sustained by the young woman who was also present.
