In the spring of 2016, the life of Broderick Brooks, a 34-year-old male member of the East Feliciana Parish School Board, was tragically cut short in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. On May 23rd, he was discovered deceased in his car, which had come to a stop after rolling into a fire hydrant on Wenonah Street. An autopsy would later reveal that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.
The initial investigation into Brooks's death left his family and law enforcement puzzled as to why he
was in that particular area of Baton Rouge before sunrise. The neighborhood where his body was found was known for its high crime rate. Investigators found the glove box of Brooks's car open and its contents scattered, suggesting a robbery. His wallet and phone were missing, though he was still wearing his wedding ring and other jewelry. The area was canvassed for witnesses and surveillance footage, but initial efforts yielded little information.
A significant break in the case came when detectives arrested 19-year-old Jacquez Tremaine Griffin. Griffin was charged with the first-degree murder of Broderick Brooks. The investigation uncovered that Griffin had a prior arrest for armed robbery. Physical evidence, including DNA found on Brooks's body and a fingerprint on a pair of sunglasses discovered near the car, linked Griffin to the crime scene. Furthermore, a photo posted on Facebook two weeks prior to the murder showed Brooks in front of Griffin's home.
During a search of Griffin's residence, which was located just a few blocks from where Brooks was found, investigators discovered a damaged gun hidden inside a suitcase. Griffin later confessed to the killing and admitted that the firearm found in his home was the weapon used. In August 2017, Jacquez Griffin pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of manslaughter and armed robbery for his role in the death of Broderick Brooks.
