In the late hours of November 18, 2023, the life of 18-year-old Keandre Simpson, a male, was tragically cut short in a spray of gunfire in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The incident unfolded at the Pine Square Apartments located at 2888 Dougherty Drive. Simpson and another individual had just returned to the apartment complex from a trip to a store and were sitting in their vehicle in the parking lot.
Around 9:50 p.m., several individuals reportedly entered the complex through a drive-in gate
and opened fire on the car Simpson occupied. The sudden and violent attack left Simpson with fatal injuries. The other person in the vehicle managed to escape and run towards the apartments to seek help and was subsequently transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
One month after the fatal shooting, on December 18, 2023, the Baton Rouge Police Department announced the arrests of two suspects in connection with the homicide. Eighteen-year-old Lester Augustus and 21-year-old Isaiah Reed were taken into custody and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Initially, they faced charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Following their arrests, the legal process against Augustus and Reed moved forward. In March 2024, a grand jury indicted both men. The charges were adjusted to second-degree murder for the death of Keandre Simpson and attempted second-degree murder for the injury of the second victim.
