In the early morning hours of July 1, 2024, a dispute in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, escalated into fatal violence, claiming the life of 36-year-old Byron Irving. The male victim was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds just before three in the morning on North Donmoor Avenue.
Authorities investigating the homicide identified Joel Johnson as the primary suspect. According to police records, a fight preceded the shooting.
In the midst of the altercation, Johnson allegedly shot and killed Irving. It is also reported that another woman was present at the scene. When she attempted to call for help, Johnson is said to have opened fire on her as well.
Following the shooting, Johnson allegedly took the woman's phone to prevent her from contacting the police and offered her $2,000 in an attempt to buy her silence. Despite his efforts to evade capture, investigators were able to piece together the events of that tragic morning. Nearly two months after Irving's death, the Baton Rouge Police Department located and arrested Joel Johnson. He is now facing serious charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and armed robbery, for his alleged role in the death of Byron Irving and the events that followed.
