In the summer of 2018, a Baton Rouge man, 32-year-old Kelvin Brown Jr., lost his life in a fatal shooting. The incident unfolded on the evening of June 7th in the 5000 block of Winbourne Avenue. Authorities arriving at the scene discovered Brown next to the roadway, having sustained fatal gunshot injuries.
Investigations into the shooting revealed that Brown had been sitting in his vehicle when another car arrived, carrying 19-year-old Tykelian Lafleur.
Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured Lafleur exiting the passenger side of the second vehicle and getting into Brown's car. What began as a prearranged drug deal escalated, and an exchange of gunfire ensued. Brown managed to get out of his vehicle but collapsed on the street and died from his injuries.
Following the incident, Lafleur sought treatment at a local hospital for a gunshot wound, telling authorities he had been shot on Winbourne Avenue. He initially claimed that neither he nor Brown was armed during their meeting. However, evidence collected at the scene, which included two firearms, cash, and suspected marijuana, contradicted his statement. Based on the collected evidence, investigators arrested Lafleur, charging him with first-degree murder. Subsequently, the man facing a potential life sentence entered into a plea deal and received a 25-year prison sentence.
