Jayrick Ja'Voy Washington, an 18-year-old male, was driving to his job at a Walmart in Baker, Louisiana, on March 23, 2024, when his life was tragically cut short in what police now believe was a case of mistaken identity. A recent graduate of Jennings High School, Washington was a student at Southern University in Baton Rouge, pursuing a degree in business. Known for his vibrant personality and contagious smile, he was just five days away from his 19th birthday.
His family described him as independent, outgoing, and someone who brought a ray of sunshine to everyone he encountered.
On that fateful afternoon, at approximately 12:48 pm, Washington was traveling on Interstate 110 in Baton Rouge when another vehicle pulled alongside his. Multiple shots were fired into his car near the Fuqua Street exit ramp and Memorial Stadium. The gunshot wounds caused him to lose control of his vehicle, which then veered off the road and crashed into a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma sustained in the crash. The incident was initially investigated as a possible road rage incident, but authorities later concluded that it was a random act of violence and that Washington was not the intended target.
For months, Jayrick's family pleaded for answers and for justice. Their pleas were finally met on December 17, 2024, when Baton Rouge Police arrested two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. George Applewhite III, 20, and Yancy Jarrell, 23, were taken into custody and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of first-degree murder. Later, in April 2025, a grand jury indicted both men for second-degree murder and assault with a firearm while driving a motor vehicle. Jarrell is also facing charges in a separate and equally tragic case involving the shooting death of an 8-year-old child.
