In a tragic incident on August 4, 2024, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a young life was cut short. Two-year-old Devonte Dawnell Joseph Chambers Jr., a Black male, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The devastating event unfolded in a home on Sora Drive in the afternoon.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the child's father, 29-year-old Devonte Chambers, had taken his son into the bedroom for a nap. After putting on a movie for the toddler, the father fell asleep.
He was awakened by the sound of a gunshot to find that his son had discovered a pistol that had been placed under his pillow. The young boy had accidentally shot himself.
In the wake of the incident, Devonte Chambers was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He is facing a charge of negligent homicide. During their investigation, police noted the presence of a partially smoked blunt next to the bed where the father and son had been resting. Chambers reportedly admitted to having smoked it earlier that morning. The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of unsecured firearms in a home with young children.
