On a Sunday afternoon in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, tragedy struck 22-year-old Jessie Johnson. On November 20, 2022, while inside a vehicle in the 9000 block of South Choctaw Drive, Johnson and a passenger were ambushed. Occupants of a Ford F-150 opened fire on their vehicle, fatally wounding Johnson at the scene. The passenger, a 25-year-old man, sustained multiple gunshot wounds but was expected to survive his injuries.
The brazen daylight shooting prompted an immediate and intense investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Thanks to the help of concerned citizens, uniformed officers were able to quickly locate the suspect's vehicle traveling on Airline Highway. This led to a brief but tense vehicle pursuit that ended in the 10600 block of Airline Highway, where the suspects abandoned their truck and attempted to flee on foot. Officers were successful in apprehending one of the suspects, 18-year-old Jakai Johnson, after a short foot chase. He was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and illegal use of a weapon.
The investigation continued, and soon after, a second suspect was identified and apprehended. Demonte Johnson, 19, was arrested in Garyville in connection with the deadly drive-by shooting. He faced the same charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and illegal use of a weapon. While two suspects were in custody, the Baton Rouge Police Department confirmed that a third individual involved in the shooting remained at large. Authorities have continued to ask for the public's assistance, urging anyone with information to contact the Violent Crimes Unit or Crime Stoppers to help bring the final suspect to justice.
