Jacoby Looney was a 21-year-old Black man who had attended Carroll and Richwood high schools in Monroe, Louisiana, and worked at a local store called Dirt Cheap. Years earlier, as a teenager, he had participated in the Special Olympics, where he was photographed cheering on his friends during a tense bowling match.
On the evening of November 5, 2020, Jacoby and a friend drove to the 1900 block of Joe G. Drive in Monroe.
They were there to meet an acquaintance known as "KD" to play video games. Shortly before 7 p.m., as they waited in their truck, two males approached the vehicle, one on each side. At least one of the men was armed. They ordered Jacoby and his friend out of the truck and onto the ground, where they took both of their wallets.
The friend later told police that he heard a gunshot and ran in one direction while Jacoby ran in another. A witness reported seeing one of the assailants chase Jacoby down and shoot him. The two men then fled in the friend's stolen white Chevrolet 2500 work truck, which had "Spray Foam Professionals" written on the side. When officers from the Monroe Police Department arrived, they found Jacoby lying in the street with at least one gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Investigators quickly determined the shooting was the result of a robbery. On November 10, 2020, police arrested their first suspect, 15-year-old Isszvian Jawon Webb. The investigation continued, and in December, two more arrests were made. Police took 19-year-old Kendarrius Latron Robinson into custody, along with a second juvenile suspect whose name was not released.
According to police reports, Jacoby's friend identified Robinson from a photo lineup as "KD," the person they had arranged to meet. Investigators came to believe that Robinson had set up the robbery. All three suspects—Webb, Robinson, and the unnamed juvenile—were charged with second-degree murder, armed robbery, and motor vehicle theft. As of December 2020, the three individuals had been arrested and charged in connection with Jacoby Looney's death.
