In the late summer of 2017, the community of Monroe, Louisiana, was shaken by the violent death of Jameon T. Coleman, a 19-year-old Black male. On August 14th, what began as a personal dispute between Coleman and another individual escalated with tragic finality. The argument grew heated, culminating in Coleman being shot multiple times. First responders arrived at the scene and administered CPR in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was
pronounced dead at the scene.
The Monroe Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts quickly led them to identify 22-year-old Lonnie Jones as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. Wasting no time, officers located Jones at a local motel and took him into custody. During questioning, Jones confessed to his involvement in the shooting death of Jameon Coleman.
Following his confession, Lonnie Jones was formally arrested and booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center. He faced a serious charge of second-degree murder. The investigation revealed that the fatal encounter was the result of an ongoing personal conflict between the two young men. The community mourned the loss of another young life to violence, with friends and neighbors gathering to leave flowers and pay their respects at the site of the shooting. The case against Jones then proceeded to move through the judicial system.
