On a Tuesday morning, just before 7:30 a.m. on September 1, 2020, the life of 35-year-old Black male Lamarcus Plater was tragically cut short in the parking lot of the Parkview Apartments in Monroe, Louisiana. He and another man, Malacra Oyah Smith, were shot and killed in a violent encounter that was captured on surveillance video.
The footage from the apartment complex showed several people in the parking lot when a man, later identified by witnesses and an informant as Delarrious
Jones, approached Plater and another individual. Jones was seen reaching over the other person's shoulder with a handgun and firing multiple times at Plater, who tragically died from his wounds at the scene.
After shooting Plater, the assailant then chased down Malacra Smith, who was attempting to flee, and shot him as well. Both Plater and Smith were pronounced dead in the parking lot. The brazen double homicide launched a nearly five-year manhunt for the suspect, Delarrious Jones, who was considered armed and dangerous.
After years on the run, Jones's time as a fugitive came to an end on March 25, 2025. Acting on tips that he was on the West Coast, U.S. Marshals, in collaboration with other agencies, located and arrested him in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jones was subsequently extradited back to Louisiana to face two counts of second-degree murder. His bond was set at one million dollars for each count. In June 2025, Delarrious Jones pleaded not guilty to the charges.
