In the early morning hours of May 25, 2019, a gathering at a home in Monroe, Louisiana, turned deadly, resulting in the death of Jonmark Miletello. Miletello, a male, had sent a text message to Jonathan Hogg about visiting his residence with a few friends. However, a larger, uninvited group accompanied Miletello to the home where Hogg was with Zachary Filhiol and Damian Haddox-Barragan.
The atmosphere at Hogg's residence grew tense, with Hogg, Filhiol, and Haddox-Barragan later telling
investigators that their guests were acting anxious and nervous. A physical altercation erupted, with conflicting accounts from each side as to who initiated the fight and the reasons behind it. Evidence suggested that the dispute was drug-related, indicating that Hogg was allegedly owed money by Miletello and another individual for a prior drug advance.
The confrontation escalated dramatically when Filhiol drew a firearm. Hogg then gained control of the weapon and fired it, striking Miletello and another man, D'Veil Freeman, Jr., as they were leaving the house. Miletello succumbed to his injuries, while Freeman required emergency surgery. Hogg would later claim that he acted in self-defense.
Following the shooting, neither Hogg's group nor Miletello's companions immediately contacted 911. Hogg, Filhiol, and Haddox-Barragan left the scene and went to Filhiol's home, where Filhiol's mother urged them to return. Hogg then had his mother call 911, and he also contacted the sheriff's office as they were on their way back to his residence. Upon their return, Hogg, Filhiol, and Haddox-Barragan were arrested. The group that had been with Miletello did not call for emergency services but did transport the wounded Freeman to the hospital.
