Dezmon Jerome 'Dez' Hamilton, a 34-year-old African American man, was fatally shot in his Zachary, Louisiana home on Sunday, July 18, 2021. The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. on Hayfield Drive when Hamilton confronted a teenager who had surreptitiously entered his residence. The father of four was a supervisor at Exxon Lubrication in Port Allen and the proprietor of a forthcoming business, 'The Sweet Corner'.

The series of events leading to the deadly encounter began when a neighbor observed a young man, later identified as 17-year-old Nicholas Mcquirter, using a ladder to climb into a second-story window of Hamilton's house. Alerted by the neighbor, Hamilton discovered Mcquirter hiding in his 14-year-old daughter's closet. He escorted the teenager downstairs to confront him. The confrontation escalated, and an exchange of gunfire ensued between Hamilton and Mcquirter. Hamilton was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. Mcquirter was also wounded in the shootout and was hospitalized in critical condition.

Following the incident, law enforcement officials announced their intention to charge Nicholas Mcquirter with second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and illegal possession of a stolen firearm upon his release from the hospital. The case, however, did not proceed to a murder trial. In August 2025, Mcquirter pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of negligent homicide and illegal use of a weapon.

The plea deal resulted in Mcquirter receiving a sentence of five years of supervised probation, a decision that sparked outrage and frustration among Hamilton's family members, who felt the sentence was unjust. The East Baton Rouge District Attorney, Hillar Moore, defended the plea agreement, stating that the lack of clear evidence to determine who fired the first shot created a significant risk of losing the case at trial. Moore asserted that the plea deal was the most prudent option to ensure some form of justice and accountability for Hamilton's death.
