An argument preceded the unfortunate death of 18-year-old Makayla Moore, a female, who was shot and killed in Zachary, Louisiana on July 28, 2023. Moore, who had recently graduated from Slaughter Community Charter School, was walking down the road after leaving the residence of the alleged suspects when the incident occurred.
The shooting took place around 8 p.m. near the corner of New Weis Road and Lee Street.
Moore was in a car with her mother and girlfriend when an argument with her girlfriend prompted her to exit the vehicle and start walking. Witnesses reported hearing Moore exchange words with three men who were on a nearby porch before a single gunshot was fired. After the shooting, all three men fled the scene.
The investigation led by the Zachary Police Department resulted in the identification of three suspects: William Cage, Ki'Drell Dantzler, and Derrionte Moore. Cage was arrested in Baton Rouge and charged with principal to second-degree murder. Dantzler, who was wanted for one count of second-degree murder, was later apprehended in Houston, Texas. Derrionte Moore faced a charge of principal to second-degree murder.
In April 2025, Ki'Drell Dantzler pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of obstruction of justice. William Cage was also arrested for obstruction of justice and being an accessory after the fact. Derrionte Moore is being prosecuted for second-degree murder. The investigation into Makayla Moore's death is ongoing.
