In the early hours of February 17, 2022, in Shreveport, Louisiana, 25-year-old Regmond Mitchell, a male, was found deceased in his black sedan in the 4200 block of Barbara Avenue. He had sustained at least one gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Shreveport Fire Department.
Initial reports to the Shreveport Police mentioned a robbery and shots fired.
Investigators from the Violent Crimes and Crime Scene units began processing the scene and interviewing witnesses. They were initially told that Mitchell had tried to rob a man and a woman at a residence in the area.
The investigation led to the arrest of Ernie Lynn Campbell. In October 2025, Campbell, then 41, was found guilty of the second-degree murder of Regmond Mitchell in a Caddo District Court trial. Nine witnesses testified during the proceedings.
According to trial testimony, Mitchell had driven a passenger to a home on Barbara Avenue. Campbell approached Mitchell's car and stood by the driver's side door. Following a brief conversation, witnesses stated that Mitchell turned his head away from Campbell, at which point Campbell fired a single shot, killing Mitchell. An autopsy confirmed that the bullet's trajectory was consistent with Mitchell not facing Campbell when he was shot. Although two guns were found in Mitchell's car, Campbell's claim of self-defense was rejected by the jury. The jury reached a unanimous guilty verdict in less than an hour. Campbell faced a mandatory life sentence to be served at hard labor without the possibility of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.
