David Allen Voegeli, aged 20, was tragically shot on February 22, 2000, in an apartment located on East 4th Street in Duluth, Minnesota. The incident occurred during an alleged drug deal that escalated into a robbery. Voegeli was shot in the spine, which left him permanently paralyzed. He succumbed to complications from his injuries on March 29, 2023, at the age of 43.
The shooting also claimed the life of 19-year-old David Greenwood, who died at the scene.
The primary suspect in the case was Darryl Andre Harris, who was 44 years old at the time of his conviction. Harris was found guilty of first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder in 2001. He was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes.
Harris claimed that he acted in self-defense, stating that one of the victims had pulled out a gun while another man attacked him with a broomstick. Despite his defense, the court found him guilty based on the evidence presented. The Duluth Police Department and the St. Louis County Attorney's Office have been involved in the case, with the medical examiner ruling Voegeli's death a homicide due to complications from paraplegia.
