On March 28, 1994, a house party in Duluth, Minnesota's East Hillside neighborhood turned into a scene of tragedy, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Peter Moore and two other young men. Moore was attending the gathering with Samuel Witherspoon, 21, and Keith Hermanson, 20, when the events that led to their untimely deaths began to unfold. The perpetrator was 19-year-old Todd Michael Warren, a senior at Proctor High School who was at the party with his girlfriend and some friends.
The
situation escalated when Warren came to believe that his girlfriend and her friend had been sexually assaulted at the party. Disturbed by this belief, Warren left the party and drove over 20 miles to his family's home to retrieve a. 44 caliber revolver. Upon his return to the house party, Warren opened fire, fatally shooting Peter Moore, Samuel Witherspoon, and Keith Hermanson. Warren continued to fire his weapon as he moved to an upstairs bedroom where other partygoers were hiding. The shooting only ceased when two men managed to wrestle the gun away from him.
Following the shooting, Warren fled the scene with his girlfriend, her friend, and another individual named Doug Towle. Warren was arrested shortly after the incident. In January 1995, a St. Louis County jury found Todd Michael Warren guilty of three counts of first-degree premeditated murder. He was subsequently sentenced to three concurrent life sentences for the killings. Doug Towle was later convicted of aiding and abetting manslaughter for his role in the events.
