The Baton Rouge Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the deadly shooting, urging anyone with information to come forward and contact either the Violent Crimes Unit or Crime Stoppers. As of current reports, the investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been made directly related to the murder of Sheldon Gales Jr.

Mourners had gathered at the Pilgrim Rest Church in Plaquemine, Louisiana, to pay their final respects. In a tragic turn of events, an argument erupted in the church's parking lot, escalating into another shooting. One individual was shot three times during the altercation.
In connection with the shooting at the funeral, the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office took 18-year-old Anthony James of Baton Rouge into custody. James was subsequently charged with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly shooting a 17-year-old male in the lower extremities. While this arrest brought a measure of resolution to the violence that marred the funeral proceedings, it remains a separate incident from the unsolved killing of Sheldon Gales Jr. His family continues to await justice as the search for his killer or killers continues.
