Dayviontay T. Jackson, a 17-year-old African American male and senior at Waukegan High School, tragically lost his life on November 11, 2016, in Waukegan, Illinois. The incident occurred during an argument at a home on McKinley Avenue, where Dayviontay and Willie C. Jackson, who were not related, were reportedly passing around an AR-15 and a pistol with other individuals present. According to court records, Willie Jackson claimed that Dayviontay pointed the AR-15 at him, causing him to fear for his life. In the ensuing struggle, Willie Jackson shot Dayviontay ten times with the AR-15, resulting in his death.
Following the shooting, Willie Jackson fled the scene, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was apprehended in Tennessee in January 2017. During his trial, Willie Jackson testified that he acted in self-defense, stating that Dayviontay had been "playing with the gun" and acting erratically. However, prosecutors argued that Willie Jackson's claims of self-defense were not credible, emphasizing that Dayviontay was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
In May 2019, after more than six hours of deliberation, a Lake County jury found Willie Jackson guilty of first-degree murder. The jury rejected the self-defense argument, with prosecutors highlighting the excessive nature of the shooting, as Dayviontay was shot ten times. Willie Jackson was subsequently sentenced to 36 years in prison in April 2021. He is required to serve the full sentence under truth-in-sentencing guidelines.
