Alvaro Ruiz Jr., an 18-year-old Hispanic male from Waukegan, IL, tragically lost his life on July 19, 2022. The incident occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex located in the 2400 block of Samson Way. According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, Alvaro Ruiz Jr. died from multiple gunshot wounds. The Waukegan Police Department responded to a call of shots fired around 10:20 p.m. that evening. Upon arrival, officers found Ruiz Jr. with severe injuries. Despite the efforts of the Waukegan Fire Department paramedics, who transported him to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the murder of Alvaro Ruiz Jr. revealed that he was specifically targeted. Numerous shell casings were recovered from the scene, and a semi-automatic handgun was also found. Detectives believe that the offenders fled the scene in a light-colored vehicle, possibly an SUV. The Waukegan Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division and Community Crimes Division were actively involved in the investigation, but no immediate arrests were made.
Further developments in the case led to significant breakthroughs. On August 7, 2024, murder charges were filed against Anthony Gallegos, a 22-year-old male from Waukegan. Gallegos, along with two other suspects, allegedly ambushed Alvaro Ruiz Jr. in the parking lot, firing over 40 shots at him. The suspects fled the scene in a gray Mitsubishi Outlander, which was later recovered and processed for evidence. Gallegos was already in custody at the Illinois Department of Corrections for a prior weapons case when the warrant for his arrest was issued. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and indicted in Lake County.
