Marshal Robert Forsyth, a 40-year-old white male, was the first U.S. Marshal killed in the line of duty. On January 11, 1794, while attempting to serve civil court papers to Beverly Allen, a former churchman, Forsyth was shot and killed. The incident occurred in Augusta, Georgia, not Saint-Elmo.
