In the late winter of 2019, the life of 18-year-old Phildarious Parrish, a senior at Stephenson High School, was cut tragically short. On Thursday, February 28, 2019, in Stone Mountain, Georgia, Parrish was fatally shot, a culmination of a dispute that had begun the day before in the bus lane of his high school.
The conflict involved an altercation with a 15-year-old freshman from the same school.
The day after the initial fight, which resulted in suspensions for those involved, Parrish and two friends went to the freshman's home on Lakewater View Drive. What transpired next ended in bloodshed. An argument erupted, and the 15-year-old allegedly fired the shots that struck Parrish. Though he was transported to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath of the shooting, DeKalb County police quickly identified the 15-year-old freshman as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. While the alleged shooter's name was not publicly released due to his age, it was reported that he was a classmate of Parrish. The investigation suggested the shooting occurred after a confrontation at the suspect's residence.
The community was left to grapple with the senseless violence that claimed the life of a young man on the cusp of graduation. Phildarious Parrish, who was just months away from receiving his high school diploma, was remembered by his family as a loved individual with plans to become a small business owner. The incident prompted the school district to dispatch a crisis team to Stephenson High School to provide support for grieving students and staff.
