On what should have been a day of celebration, Thanksgiving morning on November 23, 2017, turned into a scene of tragedy for 32-year-old Andricus Harris, a male from the Atlanta area. He and his brother had made a stop at a Chevron gas station on Bouldercrest Road in DeKalb County to simply put air in a flat tire. It was a routine task that unexpectedly escalated into a fatal encounter.
While at the air pump, an unknown man approached Harris, and an argument began for reasons that remain
unclear. The confrontation moved from the parking lot into the convenience store. Inside the store, the assailant followed Harris and opened fire, shooting him multiple times in the chest. Harris's brother, who was still outside by the car, heard the gunshots and rushed inside to find his brother lying on the floor. He immediately began administering CPR in a desperate attempt to save him, but the injuries were too severe, and Andricus Harris died at the scene.
The shooter fled the gas station, escaping in a black vehicle. Investigators quickly obtained surveillance footage from the store which captured images of the gunman. The suspect was described as a male with a beard, approximately 5'11' tall, and was wearing a white Adidas shirt with red and white Adidas pants.
Following an investigation by the DeKalb County Police Department, an arrest was made. On December 6, 2017, authorities charged 37-year-old Shannon Jackson of Decatur with murder in connection with the death of Andricus Harris. Jackson was taken into custody and held at the DeKalb County jail without bond. Two years after the fatal shooting, in July 2019, the daughter of Andricus Harris filed a lawsuit against the owners of the Chevron gas station, alleging that they failed to provide adequate security for their patrons, citing a history of crime at the location.
