In the late hours of an autumn evening in Natchez, Mississippi, the life of 23-year-old Scottie Rodgers, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On October 4, 2019, Rodgers and a female companion, Curleesia Knight, arrived at the emergency room of Merit Health, both suffering from gunshot wounds. While medical personnel worked to save them, Rodgers succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Knight was subsequently transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for more extensive treatment.
The Natchez Police Department, with the assistance of the Adams County Sheriff's Office's Special Response Team, immediately launched a homicide investigation. Investigators soon determined that drugs were a factor in the circumstances surrounding the shooting, though the exact motive was not immediately clear. The investigation quickly pointed to three young individuals who were allegedly involved in the incident that led to Rodgers' death and Knight's injuries.
Within a short period, the collaborative efforts of law enforcement led to the apprehension of three suspects. Jeremiyah Clark, 18, and Jalin Johnson, 17, were taken into custody and faced charges of murder and aggravated assault for their alleged roles in the shooting. A third individual, 18-year-old Zakya Jones, was also arrested and charged with accessory before the fact. Following their arrests, all three were held at the Adams County Jail. Initially, no bond was set for any of the suspects.
